Healing, does it work?

Updated: Feb 26, 2023

Why is healing important? When should we give in to practises of healing? What is the underlying method of good healing methods?

Healing is quite general and can have different meanings depending on the context. In more general terms, it refers to the process of recovering or restoring one's physical, emotional, or spiritual well-being.

In an emotional or spiritual context, healing often refers to the process of resolving emotional or psychological wounds, trauma, or negative experiences. This can involve various practices, such as therapy, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, or other forms of self-care.

There are emotional healing practices, that take us away from trauma, meditation that is more common in the west, and from cannabis-based therapies to sexual healing to Reiki.

From breath work to sisterhoods, there feel good methods that raise our serotonin. In the moment, in the practice and for a while afterwards.

In the moment, the treatments alter our way of thinking, help catharsis, and raise our energy.

For many this is the only reason alone, that different practices serve so well.

The practises themselves, can bring communities together. People with similar experiences and notions of life, have their beliefs intertwined. They meet up, they practise together, and the feeling is excellent. Yoga for instance is a great example of this, we created a whole industry based on it.

We take medication, I take medication, to help and calm my sensations.

What do we get from it?

We do everything we can to support our physical and emotional, mental health. And we should.

But here is my but. We should not depend on it. Our level of dependency should not be focused on external activities, it should be supporting it.

I have met people that talk about these practices as life-changing and altering. The best thing they have done and I always pause in my response.

More often than not, I want to say, “No, this alone hasn’t changed you – you wanted a change so you found something that works for you.”

The recognition of the individual's desire, to me, is more important than the activity.

Let me explain, the element of greatness we place on external activities actually takes away from confidence. The praise that an individual should give themselves to grow. The healing only took place because you went looking for a way to heal.

Recognising we need healing is just as important as the process itself.

The method, whichever one it is, is just the journey one chose to take.

Though some journeys may have altered lives, the active desire for change is much bigger than any practice.

The desire to continue is key. That’s where the magic happens.

One-time methods, are a botch and will give you a raise in serotonin. But will it heal? No, it won’t.

Healing is a long process that takes time and change.

Like our physical bodies, our minds need exercising in the way they think and grow.

I won’t be a hypocrite – journaling is healing.

To write, to work on oneself is the trick of the trade. To change, to heal is a journey and that journey comes with accepting setbacks.

It comes from recognising our own reasons to heal.

Remember to ask yourself these fundamental questions, when on your mission to heal.

What are you healing from? What does being healed look like to you? What emotional setbacks do you want to free yourself from? How does emotional healing affect your mental health?

There are things we do, decisions we make and emotions we feel. When considering the connection between the three, what aspect will help you heal?

Restoring balance and harmony

Overall, healing can be seen as a holistic process that involves restoring balance and harmony to different aspects of one's life, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual.

Here are some journal questions to help you decide what you want to heal:

Journaling for emotional healing:

· What is an emotion that lingers?

· What are the triggers for this emotion?

· How do you feel afterwards?

· What happens physically when you feel flooded by this emotion?

· What is a good technique to help you feel better?

· When is a time you overcome this emotion without feeling consumed?

· How would you like to react the next time you feel consumed by this emotion?

Healing is a great journey, we all experience it differently but remember the life-altering aspect is you. Not just the method, it is your journey that defines whether you grow from it.
